The Philippine Mangrove Conference 2026 recognizes that accountability and institutional memory are essential for building trust and momentum. Before charting new directions, we must honestly assess:

  • Which commitments from 2014-2020 platforms were achieved, and what enabled their success?

  • Which targets remain unfulfilled, and what barriers prevented progress?

  • What lessons can inform more realistic and achievable future commitments?

  • How can we build on proven successes while addressing persistent challenges?

This retrospective assessment ensures the conference builds on a foundation of evidence rather than starting from scratch, honoring the work of those who came before while creating stronger pathways forward.

A Bold New Integration

The Philippine Mangrove Conference 2026 represents a historic convergence—uniting status assessment, scientific innovation, and collaborative action into one dynamic platform.

This integration:

  • Eliminates duplication and creates synergies between data and practice

  • Strengthens the science-policy-implementation nexus

  • Incorporates accountability mechanisms that track progress on past commitments

  • Features interactive technology for real-time data visualization and engagement

  • Amplifies diverse voices with platforms for youth, women, and indigenous communities

  • Employs solution-focused formats moving beyond problem identification

  • Showcases innovations making cutting-edge approaches tangible and accessible

  • Builds ownership and commitment across sectors through collaborative design

Objective

To establish an innovative, inclusive national platform that integrates mangrove data, assesses progress on previous commitments, catalyzes collaborative solutions, and mobilizes multi-sectoral commitment for evidence-based mangrove restoration and conservation in the Philippines.

Specific Objectives

  1. Learn from the Past, Assess the Present: Building on Evidence and Experience

Evaluate achievements and gaps from commitments made during previous mangrove platforms (2014-2020) while synthesizing current mangrove status, trends, and threats from all regions through participatory data validation and real-time visualization.

  1. Share Knowledge, Co-Create Solutions: From Innovation to Policy

Showcase and facilitate rapid adoption of proven restoration techniques, community management approaches, blue carbon methodologies, and technological innovations through interactive demonstrations and peer exchange.

  1. Commit to Action, Amplify All Voices: Inclusive Accountability for the Future

Move beyond information sharing to secure concrete, trackable commitments with built-in accountability mechanisms, while ensuring meaningful participation of coastal communities, women, youth, and indigenous peoples.

Thematic Framework

The conference weaves together four interconnected themes that create a complete picture of our mangrove conservation journey:

Themes

THEME 1: PROGRESS, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND LESSONS LEARNED (Looking Back to Move Forward)

Assessment of 2014-2020 platform commitments, success factors, persistent barriers, and institutional developments over the past decade.

Key Question: What worked, what didn't, and why?

THEME 2: STATE OF PHILIPPINE MANGROVES – BLUE CARBON BASELINE (Where We Are Now)

Consolidation of regional extent, condition, biodiversity, carbon stocks, climate vulnerability, data gaps, and monitoring standards.

Key Output: National Blue Carbon Roadmap Baseline

THEME 3: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES (What Works and What's Emerging)

Proven restoration techniques, community management models, sustainable livelihoods, cutting-edge technologies, blue carbon projects, and sustainable financing mechanisms.

Key Focus: Transfer of proven solutions and cutting-edge innovations

THEME 4: CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND SOLUTIONS (Overcoming Barriers, Unlocking Potential)

Collaborative problem-solving on development pressures, land tenure, financing mechanisms, policy frameworks, enforcement, and multi-stakeholder coordination.

Key Approach: Solutions through collaborative dialogue
