Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines
The Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines (GMAP) is a national chapter of the Global Mangrove Alliance, a global collaboration that brings together NGOs, governments, scientists, industries, local communities, and funders.

OUR MISSION
OUR VISION
By 2030, the Alliance envisions a nation where thriving mangrove ecosystems, rich in biodiversity, are sustainably managed by empower communities and supported by all levels of government, the private sector, and civil society.

To conserve and rehabilitate mangrove ecosystems in the Philippines through science-based approaches and collaborative efforts with local communities, government agencies, and international partners.
UNITED FOR
CONSERVATION
The Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines was established in September 2023 by Rare Philippines, Conservation International Philippines, Zoological Society of London Philippines, Wetlands International Philippines, and World Wildlife Fund Philippines, with the mission of translating the broader Global Mangrove Alliance goals into a focused and locally grounded context.
Building on this foundation, the Alliance expanded in June 2024 to further strengthen collaboration and impact with the addition of new organizational members: Oceanus Conservation, Mangrove Matters Philippines, Oceana Philippines, and Forest Foundation Philippines.
In addition to its organizational members, the GMAP is supported by individual experts in mangrove science and conservation, including Dr. Severino G. Salmo, III, Dr. Dixon T. Gevana, and Mr. Enrique A. Nunez, Jr., whose expertise further strengthens the Alliance’s technical and scientific foundation.
ALLIANCE MEMBERS
Conservation International Philippines
Conservation International (CI) Philippines works to protect the country’s forests, seas, and biodiversity for the long-term benefit of Filipinos. By integrating applied science with traditional knowledge, the organization empowers indigenous communities—particularly the Palaw’an people—to lead forest and mangrove management. It is a pioneer in "blue carbon" strategies, developing the policy tools and financial mechanisms necessary to value coastal ecosystems as critical carbon sinks.
Wetlands International Philippines
Wetlands International Philippines is the national office of the only global non-profit dedicated solely to the conservation of wetlands. Operating under a science-based strategy, the organization drives systemic change by promoting nature-based solutions. It is a leading advocate for proper ecological mangrove restoration rather than mass-planting in unsuitable areas, while integrating mangroves into sustainable aquaculture systems to bolster coastal livelihoods.
World Wildlife Fund - Philippines
WWF-Philippines implements diverse conservation projects aimed at stopping the degradation of the country’s most biologically significant ecosystems. Through its mangrove restoration initiatives, the organization combines assisted natural regeneration with the development of biodiversity-friendly enterprises. By partnering with local People's Organizations, it ensures high survival rates for restored mangroves while providing communities with sustainable income.
Zoological Society of London - Philippines
ZSL Philippines is a science-driven organization renowned for its expertise in restoring abandoned, underutilized, and unproductive (AUU) fishponds back into healthy mangrove forests. It applies world-class scientific protocols to ensure evidence-based restoration. Through its various initiatives, ZSL Philippines works to restore thousands of hectares of coastal forest, leveraging blue carbon financing to ensure long-term protection.
Rare - Philippines
Rare is a global leader in community-led solutions that utilize behavioral science to protect nature and build resilient communities. In the Philippines, the organization partners with local governments and fishers through its "Fish Forever" campaign to restore coastal habitats and secure sustainable food systems. Rare’s work focuses on strengthening local leadership and shifting social norms toward sustainable practices to benefit small-scale fishing communities.
Forest Foundation Philippines
Forest Foundation Philippines is a grant-making organization that provides financial and technical support to protect critical forest landscapes, including mangroves. It supports holistic, community-based nature-based solutions (NbS) across key landscapes like the Sierra Madre, Palawan, and Mindanao. The Foundation prioritizes projects that restore ecosystem services while ensuring gender equality and sustainable livelihoods in natural resource management.
Oceana - Philippines
Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization focused exclusively on ocean conservation. In the Philippines, the organization leads strategic, data-driven campaigns to win science-based policy victories, such as the push for the National Coastal Greenbelt Act. Oceana works to ensure that mangroves are protected as a mandatory first line of defense against climate change, leveraging law and activism to restore marine abundance.
Mangrove Matters PH
Mangrove Matters Philippines is a youth-led environmental organization that mainstreams marine conservation with a primary focus on mangrove forests, their associated biodiversity, and coastal communities who are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis and injustice. The organization advances their mission through science communication, youth engagement, policy campaigns, and nature-based solutions.
Oceanus Conservation
Oceanus Conservation is a youth- and women-led organization dedicated to the restoration of blue carbon habitats. It utilizes data-driven approaches to monitor and protect carbon-rich ecosystems, including mangroves and seagrasses. Through its "Coastline Care Project," Oceanus engages in community-based ecological mangrove restoration and empowers local nursery holders with training in sustainable aquaculture to enhance food security.
